Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) has unveiled plans to construct an Eastern Connectivity Tunnel to link Whitefield and other eastern Bengaluru areas to Kempegowda International Airport (KIA). This tunnel is part of BIAL’s ₹16,500 crore expansion initiative to meet the increasing demands of Bengaluru’s aviation sector.

Key Highlights
Time-Saving Route: The new tunnel will bypass the crowded Hebbal flyover, reducing travel time by 30 minutes for commuters from Whitefield and surrounding areas.
Traffic Decongestion: Experts predict the project will divert about 30% of airport-bound traffic, easing congestion across existing routes.
Strategic Design: Passing beneath active aircraft parking bays, the tunnel ensures minimal disruption to airport operations. Construction begins this year, with completion targeted in three years.
Part of a Larger Expansion PlanThe Eastern Connectivity Tunnel is integral to BIAL’s broader expansion strategy, which also includes:
Two metro stations at the airport.
Taxiway and parking upgrades.
Terminal 2 Phase 2 and Terminal 3 construction to support passenger capacity growth to 85 million annually by 2030-32.
Complementing Bengaluru's Infrastructure ProjectsAligned with city-wide initiatives, the tunnel complements:
The 18-kilometre Silk Board Junction–Hebbal tunnel road under construction.
The 58.19-kilometre airport metro line set for 2026 operations.
Long-Term BenefitsThis project aims to improve connectivity, reduce traffic bottlenecks, and solidify Bengaluru’s position as a key aviation hub. Once completed, the Eastern Connectivity Tunnel will offer smoother, faster, and more efficient access to the airport, enhancing the overall travel experience for commuters.
